Statue of Liberty 2009

NYC Swim ( nycswim.org ) invited me to shoot their first Liberty Island Swim event. They've been working with authorities for 4 years to get clearances and permissions to host a group swim in the highly regulated waters at the island's perimeter. We had been discussing the KAP idea for a few weeks, and one week before the event they finally got the U.S. National Park Service to agree to let me do kite aerial photography on their island.

On the day the day of the event we started early. The swim event ferry would get the group to the island around 6:45AM. We would need to have everything wrapped up before the tourists arrived at 9:00. Winds were light and actually came to a complete stop during the race. This shot was taken after the finish and just minutes before heavy rain.

My rig had just recently been outfitted with a GS-1 Gyro Servo ( dunehaven.com ) on the tilt axis. The impact was amazing. Even as the camera dangled around, the video previews provided by the DuneCam system were fairly consistent from one view to the next. With an awkward subject like this, the system came in very handy. Thanks to Scott Armitage for the servos and quick turn around on video cables.

And thanks to Morty and Mia for getting me out there! And to Marc ( flickr.com/marcberry ) for waking up at 4:30AM and helping with the gear.

Happy Independence Day!

Herring Cove, Campobello Island

No board walk.
No crowds.
No noise.
No running water.
No restaurants.
No waterfront hotels.
No cell coverage from AT&T.

We went anyway and found peace as we basked beneath a warm August sun on a mile long stretch of soft granite sand.

Two Parks

Light winds allowed me to fly the kite (Triton) to the north of the buildings lining the FDR while I stood holding the line on Pier 1. At one point the wind picked up and I got enough altitude to peek over the upper west side residences and see this view of Central Park in the back ground with Riverside Park in the foreground.

Where the West Side Highway ends

The 20-40mph winds blowing at the tip of Manhattan were strong enough to get my Trooper to lift the D40x.

On both sides of this "luxury" apartment building we see entrances to the Brooklyn Battery Tunnel. Ground zero is located in the background a few blocks up.

Frozen farms

This year my parents are living in Lexington, MO. For this shot my G9 is lifted by my Triton kite and positioned about 700' directly above my parent's home. 18mph winds and 18 temperatures took their toll on my fingers and kept the session short.

Highbridge Water Tower

Manhattan's fresh water flows over High Bridge (white arch to the right). Back in the day, a portion of the water was pumped into the reservoir (now a swimming pool) and tower to serve residents in this "high altitude" area.

Exit 3 on the FDR

The Triton flew well this day and handily lifted the G9 out of the small amphitheater in East River park. Winds were annoying and carried the camera from the river to FDR drive and back again every 5 minutes or so. Two or three times the changes were abrupt enough to turn the Triton upside down and send it diving toward the river. Letting out line would help it recover, but it worked best after the flying angle lowered to about 45. This diving behavior is very strange for the Triton. For now I blame ill wind.
In the foreground we see a south east portion of the lower east side. Up and to the left, the Brooklyn bridge hides behind the Manhattan Bridge.

Ocean City, July 4

Nancy and finally I joined the Ocean City kite festival held on this field when the winds picked up at the end of the day. Most kites were down by this time and locals were gathering in anticipation of the fireworks display. Winds slowly died before the show started, so no fireworks KAP. ( IMG_3812-Edit.jpg )

SLEM exhibit at Governors Island

The nice folks from SLEM invited me to photograph their temporary exhibit on Governors Island. In this installation, hinged canvas paintings called "wind nomads" flutter in NYNL formation. I believe NYNL stands for New York Netherlands. See closer views of the "wind nomads" at slem.org/
And don't miss the other Dutch artists at the New Island Festival www.newislandfestival.com/

Belvedere Castle and the Delacorte Theater

A few weeks ago Brooks introduced me to Jonathan, a fellow New Yorker who was interested in kite aerial photography. He joined me on a session in Central Park and brought his Ricoh GX200. After getting the intervalometer working we got it mounted on my rig and I flew it over the Delacorte Theater. It's always nice to have help getting the kite launched. Especially this day when I flew the Flow Form 16. I'm interested to see how the GX200 compares to the other cameras I've been shooting with. After the session I managed to get my hands on this one single image from that camera. The image is low-resolution so it's hard to judge. What I've posted here has undergone extensive retouching with different treatments for the castle, trees, buildings, sky, and water. Many thanks to "Scott Kelby's 7-point system for Adobe Photoshop CS3" for the retouching advice.

Thanks to Gothamist for showing this on their site. gothamist.com/2008/11/22/extra_extra_1069.php

Rehoboth Beach

Strict enforcement of "no kites from 10-5:30" forced me to start early. Here the light is from a strong morning sun uninhibited by haze. Kite: 3 x DC-8 train.

Coney Island

After taking some photos of the CIBB RACE - Grimaldo's Mile 2008 I took advantage of winds coming off the shore to get this shot. Many of these rides will be gone soon as the area is redeveloped.
